Linked AUDIO with equivalent CONTENT
Section 508 1194.22(a); WAI / WCAG 1.0 checkpoint 1.1

Issue Description

The page contains A or AREA elements pointing to audio files.

Make sure the audio file is described within the document, or that the document contains a link to a transcript file or to a file containing a description of the sound file.

How to check

Insert a meaningful description of the audio file.
In particular, make sure the page contains one of the following:

  • A transcription of the audio/video file
  • A link pointing to a transcription

Issue Explanation

Text equivalents for sounds can be provided as textual links to a text transcript or a description of the sound file. The link to the transcript should appear in a highly visible location such as at the top of the page.

Unless transcripts are provided, the following users could not hear the audio's output and take advantage of its contents:

  • Deaf or poorly hearing users
  • Users accessing an audio device in a noisy environment
  • Users that do not have the appropriate plug-in for hearing sounds
  • Users that access the site with a computer that has no audio devices
  • Users accessing the site in a place where sounds cannot be played, such as a public library
