With the change of the immigration policy, many kids from Mainland China have arrived Hong Kong. They have to be educated. Some educationalists advocate merging these children into normal school so as to adapt to the new environment. However, these new arrivals may not want to do so. It is because they often have difficulty in studying English. This poses a big problem to their academic performance and emotional development. This has become a controversial issue.

There is no doubt that children from Mainland China always have a lower English standard than children who grow up in Hong Kong locally. Their performance in English may be worse than their Hong Kong counterparts and this may affect their confidence of learning and lead to emotional problem. However, they have to face the problem and solve it but not only be self-abased and forgive. They have to work especially hard so as to improve their English standard in normal school. Generally, children from Mainland China can pick up the language more easily if they study in normal school instead of studying in some special classes provided for them. It is because they can learn from local children. They can ask local children when they have any difficulties instead of just asking the teachers.

Furthermore, if kids from Mainland China study in normal school, they can meet more local children and make friends with them. It is true that most of the children are passive at the beginning when they come to Hong Kong. They miss their life, their teachers, their friends etc in Mainland China. They don't want to have new friends or even do not want to contact with others. They feel inferior and misunderstand that all people in Hong Kong discriminate them. However, do they know that many Hong Kong people are actually very nice and full of love? Children from Mainland China can know the lovely side of Hong Kong people if they study in normal school. It is incorrect for them to classify a person as bad without knowing him. They have to be open and meet more new friends.

Apart from improving English standard effectively and making more new friends, studying in normal school can help children from Mainland China to adapt to the new environment more easily. Of course, they can know what is going on in Hong Kong by simply watching television or going on street. But, it may not be the real situation and is not comprehensive enough. Children spend most of their time in school. The easiest way for them to adapt to the new environment will be to let them study in local schools. They can know more about Hong Kong by asking their classmate or teachers.

In my opinion, studying in normal school does more good than harm for the new immigrant. Although the lower standard of their English may affect their confidence of learning, they can work harder to get rid of that. Children can adapt to the new environment more easily if they study in normal school. It is difficult to understand why people object to do so.
